I'm talking about in more conservative dialects than yours, then :P And
if the vowel is so wonderful, why did it become /e:/ in Aussie English?
(It used to be /e@/, so 'fair' was /fe@/.) Remember: Australian English
is one of the most aesthetic languages there are, so you can't use the
excuse that it's because we're stupid and don't know a good thing when
we see it. :P (Not that we aren't stupid; after all, look who's in
charge of the country? Grr... the whole idea of a PM or President is
absurd... If I ever get into a position like that, I'll have Cabinet in
charge, not just one person...)

(And re your other post? While /Oz/ and /wOz/ and /b@kOz/ rhyme in /Oz/,
/daz/ certainly /daz/n't.)
