In most speakers' dialects, the 'ay' sound is actually a diphthong, not
a pure vowel. It sounds something like /ei/ or /eI/, though getting the
file for /e/ and for /i/ and having them play one after another probably
wouldn't sound a thing like /ei/ (because you go from one sound to the
other via every point in between, and don't necessarily end at /i/; it
may be /I/ or anywhere in between /i/ and /e/). Deviant dialects such as
mine use /&i/ (&=a-e ligature). I have a suspicion that Muke Tever (an
American on this list) once said he used [EI] rather than [ei], but I
could be wrong.
