That's a diphthong; it's really two sounds together. I've seen it represented as [ei] or [eI]. I find the first is closer to the way I say it. M P.S. I understand that vowels vary with the different English accents, and your pronunciation of "ay" may indeed be [eI]. No need to inform me of this. There, that ought to kill the English pronunciation thread before it starts.
