I probably should have said "abandoned". This kind of thing is hard to
track down, as I discovered when trying to find out when and how Tai-Kadai ceased
to be considered part of Sino-Tibetan-Burman. "The old guard dies, but
never surrenders." Usually there isn't a seminal paper.

Well, sometimes it is: most facts are inferences from observation, not
