I still fail to see how not translating something helps someone to
understand what it means? Either way someone learning is still going
to ask "What's that?" and you'll still have to explain it. If people
have no cultural reference for something, it's not going to be easy to
explain what it is. Either way, you're going to have to translate
what something is to people who don't have a concept of it.

I've heard that some religious books have commentaries, and then
commentaries to explain the commentaries.

On the other hand, sometimes missionaries have it easy.I've read that
when the Spanish came to the Philippines, they were pretty surprised
that it was fairly easy to explain Christian concepts to the natives
since they meshed pretty well with the native theology. Even today
Catholicism hasn't wiped out a lot of the pre-Spanish beliefs
