Qwerty keyboards were invented back in the days of the manual typewriter. The design was optimised to stop the hammers from sticking when one typed certain common letter combinations together. Dvorak keyboards had a different imperative: make typing fast. To do this, the layout was designed to keep as many of the commonly used keys in the home row and lay them out in such a way that you could rapidly type common letter combinations.
