IIRC I've seen modern repro amphora-type pots at Pier 1 and that ilk (they
need a metal stand since they have a pointy bottom.) If modern, yours
probably had a plant in it, hence the dirty residue. If ancient, perhaps
pine tar-- ooooh, you could make your own retsina....... :-?
