Why red? 'Red' is usually associated with communist or socialist movements,
who usually have don't have a problem with Greens or environmental activism
in general. (The Soviet Union had a horrible environmental record, but that is
neither here nor there for purposes of allegiance.)
Interestingly, during the civil war that ensued a year or so after Russia
withdrew from WWI, people suspected of Royalist beliefs were called
'turnips': red on the outside, white on the inside.
