Yeah, I see what you mean... I just associate it with exactly
such a sing-song effect that you describe, though. My classmates
tend to think, I think, that I'm trying to show off my knowledge
of linguistics (they know I'm a linguist), so I only do it when
the teacher is in ear-shot, not when we're studying by ourselves
(when I revert to more English sounding values of consonants
like /T/ for "theta", etc.).
