If there weren't any rules, kids here in school (including my own) wouldn't
have been penalized all these years by teachers for bad spelling!
    What is more interesting, perhaps, is that there are also rules for
writing
words "imported" from another language in Hebew letters without vowels!
My kids don't blink an eyelid when they come across these and read them
quickly and accurately (we just did it yesterday when I showed them an
article in a local computer magazine. They immediately read the words
(originally from English) and I was left saying something like:
"So _that_ is what it is! How could you tell?") But, then again, I didn't
go to school here and didn't learn all the rules.
