It's Anglo-Saxon; the story goes that a nun ate a leaf of lettuce
without blessing it first, and when she becomes posessed and the priest
comes to expell the spirt, he protests "I was sitting on a leaf of
lettuce, and she came up and ate me!". Unfortunately, I can't find the
place where I copied it from, so I'm not sure how exact that translation
is.
