Sublamino-postalveolar realization is rather common. Some areas even have
a distinction between sublamino-postalveolar realization of /r/+dental and
sublamino-palatal pronunciation of /l/+dental! In fact the sublaminal
articulator is probably more important than the exact point of articulation
for a sound to be perceived as "retroflex".
