And so it should. But the assumption of most hearing
people is that all deaf people are mute (and all mute
people are deaf) and this is the source of the offence
taken by the Deaf. Of course deaf and dumb is even
MORE offensive since it implies stupidity.
Many Deaf are adamant about seperating "deaf" form
other words such as "mute" and "dumb". They are very
concerned with drawing the distiction between deafness
and other conditions with which it is often (or
sometimes) associated and conflated (such as mutness,
mental retardation and blindness!).
Deaf culture in the US may be quite different from
that in Sweden or other countries. I know that US
Deaf culture in Taiwan had some significant
differences from that in the US.
