Well, in "weds", the -/z/ is an inflection, and thus not the same
morpheme. And, in "flotsam", at least in my pronunciation, it's divided
between syllables, /flot.s@m/, plus there's there's the fact that we can
have no word-initial /ts/, borrowings like "tsunami" are typically
/sunami/. At least, that's the explanation I've heard from my phonology
teacher, an affricate must be in the same syllable AND morpheme.
