So I thought it might be better to use the v-shaped form of the hacek
even with ascenders, and I even redid the text on the color chart (which
is at http://www.io.com/~hmiller/png/lindiga-colors.png). But in some
ways I think it looks worse that way. The problem is that I have a lot
of retroflex sounds, and I can't find any other diacritic that would
work without requiring special fonts ... cedilla doesn't work with {d}
or {z}.

Why doesn't cedilla work with <d> and <z>? I use it all the time in
Seinundj'e, which also has a series of retroflexes. It's very
unattractive with uppercase <N>, on the other hand, and a little shady
with lowercase. When working out of the ideal environment (fairly
often), I use a <j> suffixed to the retroflexed cluster /seinun`d`e:/.
So, if you must have something that doesn't require special fonts, then
bite the bullet and have an inelegant orthography (before the subdot,
Sanskritists used italicised letters). Or use digraphs, or multigraphs.
Good stuff.
