They might call themselves something different from what everyone else
does. Over here, firefighters call themselves "firies" --- two syllables
/fairi/ not /fai@/+/y/; a term I learnt while working with them in a
psychology project --- but unlike ambos no-one else does. (Ambo =
amulance officer.)
