Honestly I find it funny food scraps are considered rubbish. I've always considered them chook food, worm food or unprocessed compost. (Chook /tSUk/ Australian word for a living and/or whole chicken. Count noun, contrasting with the non-count "chicken". Comparable to cow:beef.) -- Tristan.
