According to AHD its etymology is uncertain, but it was most likely
a dialectical alteration of "geck" that wound up replacing the latter term.
The word "geck," which meant "fool", came Middle Low German "gek"; from
the lack of a gloss for the latter I assume it had fundamentally the
same meaning.
