Adam, the topic of chatting with IRC is too broad for me to explain. Search the Web for "IRC" or better yet "Internet Relay Chat" and see if it has any information and FAQs that would be useful. If you use Windows, I recommend the program mIRC, although some people also like Pirch. You can get mIRC at http://www.mirc.com/ and Pirch probably at any site that has shareware/free programs for Windows, such as Stroud's CWSApps List, http://www.stroud.com/. Once you get an IRC program ("client") you need to connect to a server. There are several networks of servers, including EFnet and Dalnet. mIRC comes with a large list of servers. Finally, before you actually start using IRC, make SURE you read something about how it works and what is expected of you. It can be confusing for new users.
