Since Master's degrees are a new animal in

That's similar to the procedure at US universities, though I suspect the 2nd
year would also include at least some course work. But some bypass the
Master's by declaring an intention to work towards a doctorate.

My impression is that most here do manage it in two years; perhaps a bit
more if they also have to make a living at the same time. Unless one is
planning/hoping to enter the academic world, a Master's is sufficient for
most purposes and a nice enhancement to one's résumé.
