Having been ordered by several who wish me all the best to beat my own
drum more, I hereby announce that I've finished my Master's degree in
Computational Linguistics. Since Master's degrees are a new animal in
Norway I have no idea how mine measures up to international ones. A
normal Master here is a two year run/course/study, with (nominally) one
year of taking classes and one year of research/writing a thesis. I've
yet to meet anyone who have managed it in only two years though. The old
system would have given me a cand. philologiae instead of an M-something
to go with my name.
It's not of particular interest to conlangers AFAIK, being about machine
translation of compounds and the use of search engines (like Google and
Yahoo! Search) in linguistics; the funniest part to research was the
search engine stuff. The dream would of course have been to study
typology but that isn't really done much at my uni. (If anyone *do* want
to study typology I suggest the university in Leipzig, Germany; that's
where Bernard Comrie and several other typology greats are teaching/
researching these days.)
