Indeed, English can be argued to have gender, in the form of mass vs.
count nouns, and the subdivision of count nouns into male, female, and
neuter. It's not as thoroughly engrained in our language, but try
coming up with an explanation of why you say "too much corn" but "too
many peas" :-) And by some definitions of "gender", male female and
neuter are still genders in English, it's just that they only show up in
the pronouns.
