I should mention that the lack of phonemic voice was something I did
to keep the syllabary manageable, and I've never really been happy
with the move.  I want my /s/ back.

And in the interest of full disclosure: as a youngster I did suffer
from Alien Apostraphitis; "Zan" was originally spelled "X'an".
Unlike some adult SF writers, though, I outgrew it.  :).  The
apostrophe is still present in transliteration, but it's a phoneme
rather than a decoration.
