Maybe the best bi-directional dictionary
is a pair of uni-directional dictionaries :-)
But conlanger usually deals at least with 5 languages:
1) conlang;
2) protolanguage;
3) sub- or ad- or super-strate language;
4) conlanger's native L1;
5) English.
So he needs either 5 * (5 -1) = 20 uni-directional dictionaries
or one 20-directional dictionary.
I think that the best solution is to have 5 dictionaries,
each containing explanation, etymology and
translations to several languages.
Also it would be usefull to create backward sorted index
which allows to analyze the endings and sufixes.
