In the case of a substrate, a language arrives in a place where another language is already spoken, and this last language disappears, after having influenced the invading language. A superstrate is the same phenomenon, but inversed: it's the invading language which disappears, after having influenced the original language though. So for instance Anglo-Norman was a superstrate of English. And of course, there's the case of adstrates, where both languages cohabit and influence each other, without one disappearing in favour of the other. Christophe. Take your life as a movie: do not let anybody else play the leading role.
