[{] is the one SAMPA symbol I can't stand. My current favored email-IPA
system is exactly like X-SAMPA with the exception of [æ] for the a-e
ligature and [,] for secondary stress. (I don't use "barred u" frequently
enough to come up with a workaround for it, but I don't like [}] any better
than [{].)

[jæ]. :-} At least it was in that one Star Trek episode. I've always
assumed that was a 60's thing, but maybe it's a California thing.
