I don't think used-to-ness for the alphabet has much to do with it. When
you see words as words it's because you're familiar with their shapes
already (probably they're in your native language). If you see something
strange you'll still have to look at it. Something like the IPA though seems
to be used almost exclusively for words one doesn't already know.
