And a pensée d'escalier-- "picker-upper" in the US may very likely be due to
a long-gone but amusing TV commercial for a brand of paper towel that was
touted as the "quicker picker-upper"...........
Y'all in Europe, who have not been exposed to 50-plus years of constant
TV-commercial bombardment, would be amazed at the influence they can have on
American speech. Granted, it's usually short-lived; but we probably all
remember, and at some point have said--
"I can't believe I ate the whole thing!"
"Mother, please, I'd rather do it myself!"
"I've fallen and I can't get up!"
et alia, which are probably meaningless to outlanders ;-)))
