.max is a Paperport file. If you can find and install Paperport
again, you should be able to open them and then export them to
various formats. It isn't dependent on the brand of scanner, although
some scanners (e.g. Visioneer) were bundled with it.
In my Paperport setup I also have CutePDF (a virtual printer driver)
installed so I can convert .max files to PDFs.
