I also read it the Japanese way as I first read your post. My
personal experience with this is that I pass on my morning commute on
95N a body of water called the "Wading River". I consistently read à
la chinoise as "Wa-Ding" (/wa.diN/) instead of /wedIN/, and then have
to correct myself. Definitely FLOES, or as we expats used to say,
"Dude, you've been here waaaaaay too long."
