I jumped on to http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html, clicked
the link to enter romaji, and typed "hyou". It came up with 8-10
different kanji glossed as "hyou" right off the bat.
Now, that's not the native pre-Chinese-influence phonology at work;
those would be borrowing from some point in the past centuries from
Chinese, I imagine.
