American here, too (in case anyone didn't know). I pronounce "restaurant" as ['r\Est,ra(:)nt_}], "lavatory" as ['l&v@,t_hOr\i(:)], and "ambulance" as ['&mbju,l@ns]. It seems like the distinction is where the secondary stress lies. "Restaurant" has secondary stress on the ultima, while "lavatory" and "ambulance" have it on the penultima. - Rob
