Not necessarily a language family, but highly intriguing nonetheless are
pidgins & creoles. (of course, I am kinda biased - being that I am _gaga_
over pidgins & creoles) =)
The following books are decently priced (& can be obtained in/from
various well-stocked used book stores):
    - _Contact Languages: Pidgins and Creoles_ by Mark Sebba, St. Martin's
Press, 1997 (very readable, engaging, lively style of presentation - includes
exercises to help a high school or college student understand basic materials
of text, ample pidgin & creole examples) [price I paid: $24.95, used]
    - _ Pidgins and Creoles: An Introduction_ edited by Jacques Arends,
Pieter Muysken, & Norval Smith, "Creole Language Library 15", John Benjamins
Publishing, 1995 (on its way to being a linguistics text classic IMHO; very
interesting coverage of pidgins & creoles not found too often in books on
pidgins & creoles) [price I paid: $18.00, new & discounted from $29.95
listprice!!!]
    =)
