Round these here parts, "compost" is /'kOm.post/ and "provost" is
/'pro.vOst/. Obviously YPMV.

No, the "most" in "utmost" feels like the same morpheme as the word
"most". Although I don't know what the ut- is. Shortened from
"ultimate" or something?
