I try to pick star systems that are similar in absolute magnitude to the
sun, excluding binary systems, and relatively near other systems on the
map. So it's an iterative process: as I add more star systems to the map,
others fall into place. I figure that building the ethereal tunnels must
have been expensive, and the designers would have wanted to minimize the
length of tunnels built. I really ought to extrapolate the position of
stars 6,000 years ago, but I don't know the equations for that.
In other cases, the reasons for location have to do with tradition: in =
the
Kolagian universe, the reason the constellation Lepus has that name, for
instance, is that the rabbit-people live there! So out of the list of
candidate stars, I look for one in the constellation Lepus, and voila! =
the
new location of the lagomorph homeworld is BD-18 1051.
The only actual planets detected so far (afaik) are the size of Saturn or
bigger, so I haven't paid attention to that, since (1) I'm looking for
Earth-sized worlds, and (2) artificial worlds are not out of the =
question.
