Well, this isn't quite what you're asking about, but I have a sketch
for the development of a purely written language. It developed out of
symbols used for mapmaking in a society that didn't yet have a written
language, and passed through several distinct stages, eventually
becoming a complete language, with different grammar and syntax than
that of the spoken language of the society. It was, of course, only
ever a second language. More information on request; I really only
have the outline of its development yet, not any actual content besides
a little of the first stage.
