That is not familiar to me, but I think I know why. If you
click on Element -> Font info, there are lots of file
card-things to choose. There are also some about Mac, maybe
you search the manual for them. I don't know about
generating Mac Font Families because I haven't got access
to a Mac, though up to now, twice in my life I had the
opportunity to work with a Mac for one week.

Manually renaming the font does not work, the font
information about the name and all is saved in the
compiled .ttf or .pfb file.

I'd still be grateful for answers. If nobody knows why, I
think I should better ask at the Fontforge mailing list.
