TRANS: The useless dawn...

I'm proposing another translation exercise. It's part of a
short poetic prose text by Jorge Luis Borges, one of the
few things he wrote originally in English. There are a
couple not-so-ordinary expressions, so I thought it might
be interesting. Below is my version in Senu yiVokuchi,
with comments.


    The useless dawn finds me in a deserted streetcorner;
    I have outlived the night.

    Nights are proud waves: darkblue topheavy waves laden
    with all hues of deep spoil, laden with things unlikely
    and desirable.

1. The useless dawn finds me in a deserted streetcorner;

ce-du-yue-r-i: cessative-action-night-noun-definite
um-pado: locative-corner; |pado| means "streetcorner",
"obtuse angle", as opposed to |joim| "accute/straight
angle formed by the joint of two walls, as seen from
inside".

2. I have outlived the night.

fan-aikh-e: fan- "after, beyond",
aikh- < aikh-s- < aikh-is- < aukh-is- (that's Umlaut,
vowel elision, assimilation, and consonant elision --
it's regular!)

*Some* plurals are formed by reduplication; most often
SyiV doesn't mark number.

e-lea-khul: emphatic-black-blue; the emphatic is needed
to start a noun phrase with an adjective
li-bri l-ael-a: with-heads with-full-indefinite
"with full/stuffed/packed tops"

6. laden with things unlikely and desirable.
