I've been too fast and didn't see it could happen in a prevocalic position too. Oops.
Here it is harder to explain, but it could be some analogical process. Imagine that
at a given time, the g is not felt as a consonant anymore but just as a
lengthening diacritic. It could then have been used to note lengthening, and it
could have led to a mistaken prevocalic positioning. Ok, it's not that nice,
and sounds a little swinging. But this is precisely what you want Maggel to be,
isn't it ? :D
