It's the Boston rendering of "ar", as in the famous "park your car in
Harvard Yard" ['phakj@'ca.In'hav@d'yad], and they use in "father" too.
AFAIK Boston doesn't have any [A].
Note that there are notational problems here: some people use [a] for
[&] even in IPA.
