It was written in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Demotic, and Greek. It was the
bilingual text with the known language, Greek, that made deciferment of the
unknown Egyptian possible (Demotic is simply a late form of cursive derived
from hieroglyphs). Coptic was a known language; it is still used as a
liturgical language by Coptic Christians.
