I just finished the book "Old English and Its Closest Relatives".
In that, the author has a separate section on "Old High Franconian".
He makes many references to High Franconian, Middle Franconian, and
Low Franconian, sometimes alongside references to High and Low
German. He also refers to modern Dutch as having Franconian elements
mixed in with western Low German.
So, the book gave me the impression that High Franconian was
related to High German (I think the two areas were contiguous), but
they were treated as different languages.
(PS: It was a good book.)
