Hey! Gaelic (both varieties) are pretty close to phonetic as well. Yes, it isn't a one sign to one sound system, but once the rules are laid out, it's not _that_ weird! If I can do a oue/tresse (writing a word's pronunciation in one language in any other language) in Irish (such as cua/idheat "quiet"), it can't be that incomprehensible. It is VERY VERY far from being English in this regard. Aidan Is maith liom Gaeilge.
