Book recommendation

I was going through all my old stuff today, trying to tidy up. However, as
so often happens I found a book I haven't read for ages and instead of
cleaning I sat down and read it again. This time it was one of my old
favourites, an introduction to the diachronic study of French: "Le français
dans tous les sens", by Henriette Walter. I mentioned it to my friend and he
told me that he´d read the English translation, "French Inside Out". So, if
you want a quick, easy and pretty comprehensive look at the history of
French and some dialectal information, I can recommend it (in the French
version, I don´t know how good the translation is).
