I know nothing about "russian mountains", but the salad mentionned is known
in ex-USSR as |salat olivjé| "Olivier's salad"... Who is that Olivier, I
wonder?

Oh, no-no-no! "Russian salad" is made of boiled potatoes, carrots, green
peas, marinaded cucumbers, boiled chicken meat, and dressed with mayonnaise
only! I like it!
