I think the fundamental concept of sitting is that you support your
body on your bottom or hind end or butt or whatever you prefer to
call it, while your legs are resting. Chairs or any other instrument
are not fundamental to the concept at all. You can sit on the ground,
and then your legs can be straight or bent, but usually they are bent
when sitting, whatever position.
Sitting is half-resting, intermediate between standing and lying
down. Between standing and sitting we have kneeling, where only the
lower legs are resting. All this is about defeating gravity.
