Could be reloaned from Latin a couple of times, perhaps?

Tangentially, the Swedish name of Sweden is _Sverige_ [svErjE], which appears to
be a Danish-influenced form. You would have expected **_Sverike_ [sve:ri(:)kE]
or **_Sverke_ [svErkE].
