I'm thinking that the town Skien in Norway is meant, not the word "skein."
I've unfortunately never left the North American continent, so I never heard
anyone pronounce Skien, but when I have seen Skien on a map I have used the
Anglified spelling pronounciation [skin (syllabic n)].
