what you have there is an [a] followed by a geminate [j]?

Because the end result isn't quite a vowel, I guess. If you were to go
in with some equipment and take the period of the [j] and physically lengthen
it you'd get a vowel... Maybe it's just my English preconceptions, what with
are [aj]="i". It was difficult at first to think of that as something other
than one sound.
