Iltâr means "God-child", from the root *il (child, servant, underling) and
tâ (a male deity or spiritual force). The name arose after other races had
become numerous, probably around the time of the separation of the northern
and southern Iltâr. (The word tâ was not originally used in reference to
the deities of other peoples.) In early times, the Iltâr had called
themselves simply "sentenel", people. The etymology of the name was not
transparent in later times, although it was known and occasionally taught
to youngsters.
